Please join us for my solo exhibition, Flesh and Bone, October 3rd to the 26th at Equity Gallery, 245 Broome Street, New York, NY.
There will be an opening reception the evening of October 3rd from 6 – 8pm.
Martin Dull’s oeuvre is a backstage pass to a staged production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle five seconds before curtain time; poised yet ready to pounce and luminous in the cavernous half-light appears a riot of gears and pulleys, clubbing giants, circles of fire, mythological shape-shifters, and at least one flying dragon. Layering schizy interventions on found objects, for example alternating merciless swings of a homicidal sledgehammer with gingerly applied coats of jewel-toned paint gayed-up with pinches of glitter, Dull arrives at an alien ensemble of discrete works displaying all the logic, predictability and linear progression of a waking dream. Pulled every which way by complicated gestures that defy stasis, his sleepwalk occasionally halts to coalesce into almost free -standing sculptures teetering between precipitously protruding wall reliefs and later joined by neat rows of 4” x 4” everything at once panels –the latter Cinderella-hour love letters competing for whatever and whomever is left.
Dull notes, “My work exists somewhere between object and imagination. Built over time, through deep material engagement, I aim to evoke a sense of narrative through conflation of different tropes. By commanding the visual languages of painting and sculpture, I offer a poetic and visceral environment for the viewer to explore. My goal is to connect, through making, with the deeper, unquantifiable elements that guide our human nature. ‘Flesh and Bone’ expands on this investigation. As the rudimentary building blocks of living things, our flesh and bone become the vehicles that contain who and what we are. Everything abstract about existence is supported and held by these visceral materials. This observation serves as metaphor and impetus for my engagement in, and creation of, the objects on display.”

December 2nd through January 29th, 2022 - Please join us for the opening of Art for Your Collection – Thurs., Dec 2., 6-8pm, at the Catherine Fosnot Art Gallery and Center, 165 State Street, New London, CT.
The Catherine Fosnot Art Gallery and Center in New London, CT and The Visual Art Library will again host the annual Art for Your Collection exhibition, opening on December 2nd at the gallery in Harris Place, 165 State St, 6-8 PM. Art for Your Collection was originally held at The Worcester Art Museum in 1958 and 1959 and then moved to RISD where it was held for almost 30 years. Last year, The Fosnot Gallery and The Visual Art Library hosted the annual show in New London. Ten renowned art critics were asked to name 3 to 4 artists on their radar—artists they considered important to include in the show. These artists were notified of the recommendation and invited to submit images of their work for review. The artists were given free expressive reign: some artists submitted their latest works; others created a special piece for the show. A review committee was formed and chose over 70 pieces of art, which will be on display in the gallery through January 29, 2022.
The artwork selected includes signed prints, drawings, collages, sculpture, paintings, and photography. It is an exciting, thought-provoking mix of contemporary voices. The artists whose works are included in the show are Alchemyverse (Yixuan- Shao & Bicheng Liang), Brandon Anschultz, Charity Lynn Baker, Lisa Corinne Davis, Martin Dull, Fred Gutzeit, Sono Kuwayama, Stephen Lack, Jazzmen Lee-Johnson, Joanne Mattera, Judith Modrak, Donna Moylan, Jordan Seaberry, Clintel Steed, Gina Werfel, and Cecilia Whittaker-Doe.
The art is all available for purchase. Prices of the works in the show range from $75 to $5,000. Admission is free. A portion of the proceeds will go to the non-profit Visual Art Library, also located in New London.

February 1st - Please join me for the opening of my first solo exhibition with Brooklyn based gallery, M David & Co. The reception will take place 6-9pm at 56 Bogart Street in Brooklyn, NY.
M. David & Co. is proud to present Martin Dull’s debut one-person exhibition in NYC, Transubstantiation.
Transubstantiation is the change of substance or essence by which the bread and wine offered in the sacrifice of the sacrament of the Eucharist become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Though Dull was raised Catholic and chose the title for the exhibition, he is not making the case that these works are a literal interpretation of this sacrament. Instead, it’s a metaphor for the alchemy of painting and a sense of secular spirituality found in the transformative practice of painting.
I find in Dull’s work there is a compression of energy, a subversion of anger and an energy released through a mitigation of that anger with a lush beautiful and wide ranging color sense. There’s also an insertion of collage elements and sensitive marking on a large scale that evoke Terra Mater and Protogenoi.
Dull is of the latest generation of gestural abstract painters that renews and extends the tradition of action painting by imbuing it with a sense of self from an underlying personal narrative. This is in contrast to the first two generations of action painters who were searching for an objective reality. Through this more subjective use of gesture, he renews this language thereby making the work crucial again.
